Power for video

For lights, monitors and rigs, Baxxtar has two battery systems: NP-F (Sony L series) for LED lights and field monitors – and V-Mount, which powers several devices at once via D-Tap. Plus the matching chargers.

Runtime calculator

How long does the battery last?

Enter how many watts your devices draw in total – this is stated on the rating plate or in the device’s data sheet. The calculation is the battery’s energy (Wh) divided by the power (W).

Buying advice

What to look out for

V-Mount: look at the energy in watt-hours (Wh) and the weight: the compact V50 with 47 Wh and 322 g is light enough for gimbal and shoulder set-ups. For long shoots with broadcast cameras there’s the BP-190WS with 190 Wh, a USB output and an LED charge level indicator. To connect it, you need a V-Mount plate on your camera or rig; via D-Tap you can also power a monitor or light.

NP-F: compare the energy in watt-hours (Wh): NP-F550 25.2 Wh, NP-F750 50.4 Wh, the large models 69.1 to 75.6 Wh. For long shooting days, the NP-F970 Plus and NP-F970 PD with 10500 mAh each are worth it; the NP-F970 PD can be charged on the go via USB-C without an extra charger and also works as a power bank.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ – video power

What is a V-Mount battery?
A V-Mount (also V-Lock) battery is a larger interchangeable battery that attaches to camera rigs, monitors or lights via a V-Mount plate and powers several devices at the same time – widely used in video and film.
What is the D-Tap port for?
The D-Tap output lets you draw power directly from the battery to supply accessories such as monitors, LED lights or camera adapters – without separate batteries.
Does the battery fit my camera directly?
A V-Mount battery sits on a V-Mount plate or an adapter on the rig or camera. Mirrorless cameras are usually powered via a D-Tap-to-dummy-battery adapter. You choose the plate and adapter to suit your set-up.
Does the NP-F fit modern Sony Alpha cameras?
No. Depending on the model, Alpha cameras use the NP-FZ100, the NP-FW50 or the NP-FM500H (see camera list). The NP-F series mainly powers video accessories such as lights and monitors, as well as older camcorders.
What is the difference between NP-F550, F750 and F970?
Essentially capacity and size: the F550 is the most compact, the larger types have more capacity (values under ‘Specifications’). Accessories (monitors, lights) generally take all three sizes.
